Fires in the Yucatan Peninsula

Fires in the Yucatan Peninsula

The the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite captured this color-enhanced infrared image of numerous fires burning in Mexican states of Campeche and Tabasco, and northern Guatemala on April 25, 2017. The actively burning fires are marked in red. February to May is the dry season in this part of the world, and these conflagrations could be forest fires or intentional agricultural burns set by farmers preparing their land for the coming growing season.
